Job Description:

Family Court Mental Health Services (FCMHS) is a mandated, direct-service program administered by the Central Office Division of Medical and Professional Affairs. It serves a culturally diverse population of families, youths and adults by performing a wide variety of court-ordered evaluations in child protective, delinquency, and domestic violence cases, other Family Court proceedings, and on-site emergencies. Clinics are located in all five boroughs of New York City Family Courts, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island.

FCMHS receives referrals for forensic evaluations only from the Court, via judicial order. Licensed psychologists with high-level competencies required for forensic evaluations, who can testify in court as expert witnesses, perform these evaluations. Under direction, with broad latitude for independent or minimally reviewed action or decision, FCMHS psychologists perform work of significant professional difficulty and responsibility in the field of forensic psychology.

General tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Performs a variety of forensic-clinical evaluations, in compliance with program requirements and quality standards
  • Completes multiple clinical evaluations within the standard/acceptable caseload requirements and timeframes of FCMHS
  • Through clinical interviewing, interactional observation, and/or through the selection, administration and interpretation of standard tests of personality, development, and intellectual capacity, evaluates individuals’ emotional and intellectual functioning
  • Provide neuro-psychological and various other assessments as required
  • Prepares formal written reports, which will be included in Court records, in compliance with program requirements and quality standards
  • Provides Court-ready reports one or more scheduled workdays in advance of due dates, except in emergency or expedited cases
  • Testifies as an expert witness in compliance with program requirements and quality standards
  • Participates in in-service educational and administrative activities, in compliance with program requirements and quality standards.
  • May give instruction or training in psycho diagnostic and/or therapeutic techniques
  • May oversee the work of psychology interns, other students, and paraprofessional mental health workers

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or PsyD in Clinical, Counseling or School Psychology
  • Valid New York State Psychologist License
  • Proficient in general clinical assessment and writing
  • Prior forensic or court experience preferred
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Bilingual a plus
