ICF is seeking PhD-trained Research Scientist with a background in psychological health research (epidemiology; experimental, clinical, or social psychology) to support a Department of Defense (DoD) client in the Washington, DC Metro Area. We seek scientists with strong data analytic skills who have a track-record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals (primary or supporting author).

The position focuses on psychological health research to enhance the DoD behavioral health community’s knowledge of psychological health conditions of greatest concern to the military. The position requires strong research skills with demonstrable capacity to answer health services questions in two primary ways: 1) conducting original research by aggregating and analyzing large behavioral health datasets, and 2) conducting or supporting secondary research such as systematic reviews and meta-analyses, rapid reviews, and research gaps reports.

The selected candidate will help produce reports and peer-reviewed publications, presentations, and other products requested by stakeholders. They will aggregate, analyze, synthesize, document, and disseminate psychological research data and findings as part of an interdisciplinary team comprised of Research Psychologists, a Statistician, an Epidemiologist, and other Research Scientists and support staff.

We seek candidates with at least 8 years of relevant post-doctoral experience. Preference will be given to candidates with military psychological health research experience.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Answer health services questions about the active-duty military population by designing and conducting research projects as principal or supporting investigator.
  • Work with other team members (e.g., Statistician, Epidemiologists, Research Psychologists) to apply statistical analyses and methods in managing, analyzing, and interpreting findings to inform written evidence-based products.
  • Provide expert consultation and support on the design and implementation of ongoing efforts.
  • As principal or supporting investigator, aggregate, analyze, and interpret large datasets to produce evidence-based products, including peer-reviewed articles, briefings, whitepapers, and blog posts, on psychological health topics. Ensure evidence-based conclusions and interpretations are informed by reliable and valid data.
  • As principal or supporting investigator, conduct literature reviews, including systematic and rapid reviews, to produce evidence-based products, including peer-reviewed articles, briefings, whitepapers, and blog posts, on psychological health topics. Ensure evidence-based conclusions and interpretations are informed by reliable and valid data.
  • Utilize biomedical databases and conduct web searches utilizing repositories such as PsychARTICLES, PubMed, EMBASE, OVID, CINAHL, The Cochrane Library,, etc.
  • Conduct evidence synthesis and dissemination initiatives, including internal projects and external reviews conducted by federally funded research and development centers.
  • Inform the client’s research agenda by performing research gaps reviews that identify areas of Psychological Health where greater knowledge is needed; and support efforts to prioritize the agenda with this evidence-based research.
  • Respond to requests for information from other areas of DoD, other government agencies, Congress, the White House, etc. by researching a specific psychological health topic and providing analytical support. These requests occasionally require very quick turnaround.
  • Prepare and present findings internally, to DoD Workgroups, and at conferences.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • PhD in Epidemiology or Psychology (experimental, clinical, or social psychology) with a background in behavioral health research.
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise with multiple data analysis and statistical analysis methods.
  • At least 8 years of post-doctoral experience conducting biomedical research in the field of psychological health.
  • Demonstrated expertise with statistical packages to include SAS or SPSS.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting research projects that produce peer-reviewed publications in scholarly research journals.
  • Expert level knowledge of APA citation formats; proficiency with citation and bibliographic software.
  • Experience utilizing biomedical databases and Psychological Health-related repositories such as PsychARTICLES, PubMed, EMBASE, OVID, CINAHL, The Cochrane Library,, etc.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate directly with peers, managers, and clients while leading projects to successful completion.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple timelines and complete tasks quickly within the constraints of client timelines and budgets. This position is expected to support more than one PHCoE project or activity at a time.
  • Very strong MS Office skills, specifically Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint

Desired Experience:
  • Prior military psychological health research experience.
  • Experience working in, or with, DoD or other federal agencies.
  • Experience conducting meta-analysis or evidence grading in military mental health.
  • Prior experience supporting federal service contracts.
