Description

CLINICAL RESEARCH PSYCHOLOGIST

The Department of Veterans Affairs is accepting applications for a licensed psychologist to lead the Clinical Science Core of the VISN 17 Center of Excellence for Research on Returning War Veterans. The psychologist will serve as a senior leader of the Center, overseeing a team of researchers, technicians, and support staff. They will also supervise and conduct research projects either as a principal investigator or research collaborator in topics related to psychological factors associated with mental illnesses in Veterans and their treatment. The Program Manager will successfully apply for grants and/or other extramural funding. Additionally, they will provide training and educational opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students, medical residents, and postdoctoral fellows working in CoE laboratories.

Strong candidates for this position will have a track record of extramural grant funding with several years of experience directing and managing research projects that produce important findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

ABOUT THE CENTER

The VISN 17 Center of Excellence (CoE) is a unified scientific and educational center featuring clinical space, observation rooms, wet labs, transcranial magnetic stimulation, psychophysiological recording labs including EEG and ECG, and a 3T MRI for structural and functional neuroimaging. The CoE is located in Waco, TX within one of the largest integrated health care systems in the United States, which serves a Veteran population of more than 252,000 and is located near Fort Hood with approximately 45,000 active-duty forces. The CoE also has active partnerships with the University of Texas and Baylor University, in addition to collaborations with other academic institutions and VA systems.

The center uses a multidimensional approach to investigate and develop advanced methods for assessing and treating several mental health issues that are often experienced by Veterans returning from recent active duty service using different levels of analyses including:

  • Treatment Process and Outcome Research
  • Neuroimaging and Physiological Research
  • Molecular and Biological Research

Our investigators have used these approaches to investigate topics such as evidence-based treatments for PTSD, suicide, traumatic brain injury, moral injury, and military sexual trauma. Our investigators are also actively involved in research on transition-stressors in Veterans leaving active-duty service, internet-based therapies, emotion regulation, neurofeedback, biomarkers of trauma, and transcranial magnetic stimulation.
