Company History

During its history, Rutland Mental Health Services has occupied several locations within Rutland County and undergone various role and identification changes. In 1939, the Vermont legislature passed an act to establish five psychiatric clinics in Vermont. Rutland was one of the locations for such a clinic and in the late 1940’s, a small, part-time service was established in the Trinity Episcopal Church. Rutland Mental Health Services, Inc. had its beginning in 1951, when the Department of Health of the State of Vermont established five child guidance clinics in Vermont. The first full time clinic opened at 14 Cottage Street in Rutland and was known as the “Rutland Town Guidance Clinic”. The basic purpose of the clinic was simply to serve the emotional needs of the people within the community. Since, RMHS has been serving the community since under the name, Community Care Network.
