DESC

Company Overview

DESC (Downtown Emergency Service Center) is a nonprofit organization working to help people with the complex needs of homelessness, substance use disorders, and serious mental illness achieve their highest potential for health and well-being through comprehensive services, treatment, and housing. Our vision is a community where no person is abandoned, ignored, or experiencing homelessness.

As the region's leading provider of services to multiply disabled adults who have experienced chronic homelessness, DESC serves almost 2,000 people each day. Our integrated service model is designed to help people secure and maintain appropriate, safe and affordable housing. DESC is recognized nationally and regionally as an innovator in developing solutions to homelessness.

Company History

The Downtown Emergency Service Center (DESC) was founded in 1979 to provide emergency shelter and survival services for people living in a state of chronic homelessness and who, due to their severe and persistent mental illnesses and substance use disorders, were not being served by existing missions of that day. Today, DESC is a recognized national leader in implementing innovative, cost-effective strategies that end homelessness.

Benefits

• DESC-paid medical and dental insurance: we cover 100% of the employee-only premiums for medical, vision, prescription, and dental insurance.

Our medical insurance company is Kaiser and our options are listed below:
o Large Network Plan (Access PPO): This plan allows you to go to non-Kaiser locations. This particular plan is worth almost $11,000 for a year of coverage.
o Low Copay Plan (Core HMO): This plan limits you to Kaiser locations, but the copays and deductibles are lower. This plan is worth a little over $9,000 for a year of coverage.
o Cash Back Plan (Core HMO): This plan limits you to Kaiser locations, but with this plan, you receive a $100 monthly bonus if you enroll in employee-only coverage, or, if you have a spouse or children you need/want to insure, DESC instead contributes over $250 per month towards their premiums. In addition, this plan comes with an HRA worth $1200 to assist in paying for the higher out-of-pocket maximum that is associated with this plan. Including the HRA (but not the $100 bonus), this plan is worth a little over $9,000 for a year of coverage.

Our dental insurance is through Ameritas and our vision is through VSP (though administered by Ameritas).
• Medical and Dependent Care FSA options.

• DESC-paid Life and AD&D Insurance: DESC pays for a $10,000 policy for both Life and AD&D insurance (total policy amounts of $20,000), at no cost to you. You would also have the option to enroll in additional Life/AD&D insurance that you would pay the premiums for.

• 34 days of PTO per year – starting! You accrue 34 days of PTO (10.63 hours per pay period/semimonthly) in your first and second years, 38 in your third and fourth years, and finally 42 days per year in your 5th year and on. (PTO is for both sick leave and vacation, so if you don't get sick often, you get more vacation! Or, if you tend to be sick more often, you have more flexibility with your PTO, instead of being limited to a set number of designated sick leave hours.)

• DESC-paid Long Term Disability Insurance

• 403b Retirement Plan: Each year, DESC contributes 1-2% of your annual pay (depending on how well we do each year) towards a 403b account once you become eligible for DESC contributions (basically after working 12 consecutive months). This doesn't require you to enroll in 403b paycheck deductions - you get the contributions regardless!

• ORCA Card Subsidy: DESC contributes $29 per month towards any type of ORCA card you enroll in (monthly pass, e-purse, etc.)

• Paid bereavement leave (3 days) and jury duty leave (# of days varies due to duration of jury duty).
