The Semmes Murphey Clinic is hiring a Financial Counselor. This is an onsite position and approximate hours are 8:00am-4:30pm Monday to Friday.
In this role, you will communicate with the patient and their health insurance provider in matters regarding their account and reimbursement services. You will spend time with patients both in person and by phone to counsel them and or their families regarding payment responsibilities and options. This role is perfect if you have a passion for customer service and can help bring clarity to patients facing difficult or confusing financial matters.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Contacts health insurance providers to determine coverage and benefit limits
- Works up patient financial responsibility for scheduled blocks and surgeries
- Contacts patients to discuss payments required prior to surgery or blocks
- Speaks with patients via the phone regarding payments needed on their account
- Abides by Semmes Murphey's guidelines for setting up patient payment plans
- Reviews the daily clinic schedule to determine which patients need to make payments on current balances or pay towards their deductibles, use self-pay pricing, or fall under out-of-network status
- Reviews the physical therapy schedules to determine which patients need to pay co-payments, deductible, self-pay prices, or out-of-network prices
- Reviews the out-clinic schedule and contacts patients regarding payment required at time of service
- Discusses financial issues with patients face-to-face and answers patients' questions regarding insurance
Minimum Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Two (2) years experience with medical collections and insurance
- One (1) year experience discussing financial matters with patients
Preferred:
- Experience working in a clinical setting
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Highly proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Word), electronic medical records (EMR), and medical practice software
- Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the medical/insurance field
- Effective communication, both oral and written, with the ability to speak clearly and persuasively in positive and negative situations while listening and responding appropriately to questions
- Can skillfully gather and analyze information
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
- Organizational skills with attention to detail
- Can provide excellent customer service and manage difficult or emotional situations
- High level of confidentiality and discretion
- Ability to learn and understand the concept of CPT codes representing services/procedures rendered to patients in a healthcare setting
- A sound understanding of terminology regarding insurance coverage
- Ability to complete tasks in spite of numerous interruptions
